About Guatemala Fuerza de Mujer Organic
Organically grown, Fair Trade coffees from Asproguate Cooperative in Guatemala have been a staple in our single origin menu since the beginning. This year, we are pleased to offer a new selection from the cooperative - Fuerza de Mujer.
The Story
In 2014, a group of producers came together in search of development opportunities for their communities, founding an association named Fuerza de Mujer (“Women’s Strength” in English). Fuerza de Mujer now represents the coffee grown by more than 300 women located in the regions of San Martín Jilotepeque, Acatenango and Atitlán, many of whom act as the sole heads of their homes, as a result of the migration of their husbands to the United States in search of job opportunities. In 2015, Fuerza de Mujer associated with the Asproguate Cooperative, an exemplary cooperative we have partnered with for the past two years. Asproguate’s resources offer Fuerza de Mujer training and support in coffee production and processing, as well as access to global markets like ours.
Over the past several years, Fuerza de Mujer has shown commitment and dedication in the trainings, consistently improving the quality of their crop while building and maintaining Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, and Organic certifications. Fuerza de Mujer has developed training for their members on women’s empowerment, financial management, health, nutrition, and diversification of income. About 20% of the growers are also weavers of beautiful, traditional Guatemalan textiles.
The Cup
As is common in well-produced, high-elevation Guatemalan coffees, Fuerza de Mujer has great clarity in the cup and a pleasing clean sweetness, making this a perfect candidate for your every day cup. We taste delicate notes of citrus, stone fruit, and dried fruit that dance on a rich structure of chocolate and caramel.
We’re roasting Fuerza de Mujer to a medium level for balance of flavor and mouthfeel, developing the sugars for caramely-chocolatey goodness, while preserving the delicate notes of citrus and orange blossom.. This coffee lends itself well to filter brewing applications such as batch brew, pour over, and French Press.
We hope you enjoy the harvest of these dedicated and hard-working women farmers and savor the sweet flavor profile of organic mountain-grown Guatemalan coffee!
