About Ethiopia - Halo Beriti Natural

Cup Profile

Soft and comforting, Halo Beriti is like a warm hug from a loving grandmother, if your grandmother happened to be world class Ethiopian coffee. Light bodied, but creamy and smooth, it's hard not to curl up to notes of sweet bread, baking spices, and cocoa with a fresh floral fragrance. This is a unique flavor profile for a natural processed coffee, trading the expected fruit-forward tasting notes for a more pastry-like profile. We think this is a great light roast coffee for those needing a quick reprieve from the expressively fruity light roasts that so often dominate our offerings.

The Producer

In an area full of world-class specialty coffee, the famed Halo Beriti washing station in Ethiopia's southern region constantly produces exceptional quality and delicate, balanced, dependable coffees year after year. An estimated 700+ smallholder farmers bring their finest harvest to Halo Beriti, which has a reputation for paying farmers higher prices for their best coffee cherries. As a result, Halo Beriti has so far won 4 prestigious awards from organizations such as the Cup of Excellence and Golden Bean Australia. The company manages to do this by investing heavily in farmer training, sharing profits with farmers and encouraging exceptional farmers by processing their lots individually (and passing on profits from these lots to the individual farmers). “We want this to be a community effort where everyone sees and reaps the benefits of coffee”, explains washing station partner Mebrahtu Aynalem. “The job of the washing station is simple. The real work happens before the cherry comes to us."

The Roast

We feel that specialty coffee from Ethiopia deserves nothing darker than a light roast, so that the full spectrum of flavor and terroir remains present in the brewed cup. For this particular lot, we have kept the final temperature low, but extended the development time just a few seconds longer than normal to accentuate the delicious sweet bread and baking spice notes that are begging to be revealed.

Ethiopian Halo Beriti

No need to brace yourself for the up front, over the top fruitiness you expect from Ethiopian coffees. This coffee is SMOOTH. Warm bread from the oven comfort food! Mouthfeel is light and silky; gentle floral hints combine with lightly toasted marshmallows and sweet bread to create a totally unique Ethiopian coffee. My new favorite, for sure!

Lovely Light morning coffee

An unusually floral Ethiopian, light and ethera.
