We love African coffees and while we've had some stunning offerings from the continent, we still have so much to explore. Enter our first coffee from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Despite its wealth of natural resources, the DRC has become one of the poorest nations in the world due to near constant post-colonial civil war since the 1990s. Once a thriving coffee producing region, political instability, conflict, and the lack of an export market has reduced the earning potential for coffee farmers and thus greatly reduced the production of coffee in the DRC.
Recently, several coffee cooperatives have risen to help reduce the risk for coffee farmers and to share the burden of processing and export-related expenses. Mighty Peace Coffee, who has brought this coffee to the states, is one such organization. Mighty Peace is a women- and minority-owned social impact coffee company serving 15,000 independent coffee farmers, and is direclty involved in the country's peace movement. By providing support, education, and sustainable economic opportunities for DRC coffee farmers, Mighty Peace unites communities previously divided by violence and armed conflict.
In addition to the positive social impact of this Congolese coffee, it is also an outstanding cup! We are enjoying a soft, sweet, and clean cup with a super unique flavor profile featuring notes of orange juice, vanilla, black tea, white chocolate, and almond. This is a very limited release, so grab a bag while you can!
